Yes. Speaking of ideals, there needs to be reckoning about Vietnam these many decades later. To still believe it was only wrong is to deny the reality of what Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand have become in the five decades since the war - modern democratic economies, while Vietnam remains undeveloped and steeped in corruption.

Loved this piece. Snake-staring, making peace with a temperament for nuance-maxxing, and letting go of erstwhile ideals will stick with me. I'm reading the fiction, Free Food for Millionaires, and the protagonist rereads Middlemarch every morning - I'll def have to read it now
